Welcome to the What Creativity Looks Like series. Every week this summer, I’ll be introducing you to some amazingly creative women. My hope is as you read these interviews and virtually meet these ladies, you’ll be inspired to create more in your own life.

Let’s get started!

What’s your name (and business name, if you have one)?

Jill Wolcott Knits

Tell us about YOU. How is your creativity expressed?

I am primarily a hand knitting designer. I started in fashion design, but love the ability to create fabric, texture, and shape that knitting gives me.

How did you get started in your creative practice? (“Practice” is just a fancy word for all the fun creative things you do. :))

I started drawing and sewing as a child. Began designing clothing in high school based on things I’d see in magazines and movies.

What keeps you going?

I don’t know what else to do! I am so happy creating that it is really all I want to do.

What is your greatest joy?

I like solving problems. I think of something then spend whatever amount of time is needed to figure it out to my satisfaction.

What’s a “typical” day (or week) like for you? In other words, how do you incorporate creative projects into your life?

I work like most people. Some creative time, some computer time, social media. I end most days with some drawing, then I cook dinner, watch TV with my spouse, and knit.

What would you say to someone who wants to be creative but can’t find the time?

This is not something that anyone else will give you. You have to want it enough to sacrifice to have it.

What do YOU think creativity looks like?

Creativity is so different for everyone. I think it is curiosity, tenacity, failure, and joy.

I love that. Creativity is “curiosity, tenacity, failure, and joy.” It truly is an all-encompassing thing, isn’t it? I hope this thought encourages those of you who might be struggling in your creative lives. It definitely encourages me! By the way, all of the beautiful pictures above are Jill’s patterns that you can find here on her site, Jill Wolcott Knits. She has soooo many patterns that range from beginner to advanced for whatever stage of knitting you’re in.

Have a lovely {and creative} day!

  1. Beautiful patterns! I love all the blue ones especially!!! I cannot knit (I did try but my left hand will not cooperate due to some Ulnar Nerve damage) but I have always loved the drape of the fabric and how it just does not look bulky like crocheting does.
