How to Make a Simple Quote Canvas

I love our local library. It’s my go to for testing out all the books on my Amazon Wish List—you know, to see if they really should be on the wish list! 🙂 Recently, I checked out A Beautiful Mess Happy Handmade Home which was such a fun treat to look through. Like the Beautiful Mess site, it was filled with simple crafts and DIY projects that traversed every area of the home. My eye caught on a simple quote canvas almost immediately, and I thought, “Why haven’t I made something like that before?!”

I loved that they didn’t try to make the quote canvas perfect–that the lettering wasn’t stellar and ah-mazing. It was simple and sweet and sang out the lyrics that make them happy. What a refreshing thought, don’t you think?

I decided to try to make my own piece, though mine is much smaller. You can really do this on any size of canvas, I just happened to have an 8 x 10 canvas on hand so I used that.

First, I highly recommend writing your quote in pencil on a piece of paper that is the size of your canvas (or assemble several pieces of paper to do this.) The reason being, it is much easier to see how many lines you will need and how large you need to make the letters rather than finding out while you’re painting.

After doing this, I also lightly penciled the words onto the canvas itself. Be careful here, because lead can be tricky to erase off of canvas. I recommend kneaded erasers for that job.

For my quote, I used black watercolor paint and a watercolor brush that has a chamber of water in it. I loaded my brush with black paint and just started painting.

You could use a myriad of colors and have them bleed into each other or paint the background a bold color to make it pop.

You can find really small canvas squares at the art store (and some craft stores) these days so you might want to consider making several of these for gifts this year. Think of it as an artsy take on the mix tape. This would also be a fun craft to make for a crafternoon with friends, don’t you think?

Have you ever made a quote canvas for your home?

And p.s. wishing all of my U.S. friends a wonderful Thanksgiving! 🙂
