For today’s Creative Play Challenge, we’re going to make a Valentine. I’ll start off by sharing a quick tutorial of a valentine I made this weekend and then end with 10 cute Valentine ideas (many of them include free printables!) So let’s get started.
Last weekend I was playing around with my art supplies and before I knew it, I was painting a bunch of hearts. I used Tombow pens, watercolors, and gelatos to see how each of them responded to water. That experimentation led to this tutorial (so never discount your creative play time—you never know where it will lead.) It’s really easy to make a card like the ones pictured. Let’s get started! 🙂
Make a Valentine
You’ll Need:
One piece of watercolor paper
One or two plain white cards
Watercolors, gelatos, water soluble markers, paint, etc.
Paintbrush & water
Scissors
Gel pens, paint pens, and pencils for accents and doodles
Glue dots
To start, fill up your watercolor paper with hearts of all sizes. You’ll want some larger ones for the base, medium hearts for the middle, and small hearts for the center of each Valentine. Experiment with different mediums and see which ones you like the best. By the way, if you make too many hearts, just keep them to use in different art projects later.
Let the paint dry, and then cut out the heart shapes. Layer them onto the plain white cards and affix with glue dots. (You’ll need to use an adhesive that is more substantial than regular glue as the watercolor paper will pop right off the paper.) I like how the glue dots make the card 3-dimensional. 🙂
Add doodles, decoration, and your thoughts with a gel pen to finish your Valentine’s Day card!
