How to Make Gorgeous Butterfly Cards

Thank goodness for Anthropologie catalogs. I’ve used those beautiful pages for more projects than I can count, and today I’m going to share the world’s easiest butterfly card tutorial using the lovely pictures found in an older Anthro catalog.

Now, of course, you can use any magazine you’d like, but the reason I especially like their catalogs is the vast variety of textures and colors you get to play with. In the particular one that is pictured, I used images of walls papered in newspaper, a red sweater, a luxurious bedspread and several other colorful items.

I store a few catalogs along with pieces of colorful paper and other card making fun in a plastic drawer that I can pull out when I need to make something. These supplies are also great for vision board making, art-journaling, and collage.

How to Make a Butterfly Card

For this card, you will need:

One blank card (and envelope)
Catalog (or pieces of colorful paper)
Butterfly decorative punch (This is the one I used.)
Glue stick
Gel pen

Maybe you don’t remember the olden days of what decorative punches used to be like but wow, I have a couple of those older ones and they require major finger strength in order to use them. To make the card:

Decide which patterns and backgrounds you want to use and begin punching butterflies. If you are using the same punch I used, you’ll want three butterflies across. If you are using a different one, punch a couple items and then arrange them to your liking. Once you’re satisfied with your design, glue them down to the card. Embellish with a tiny greeting at the bottom of the card. I used a black gel pen but next time, I’ll use gold or silver for an extra pop.

This “technique” can also be used for gift tags if you want to whip up a few while you’re at it. And you can use these punches to make cute bunting to put in your card if you want to send a sweet little surprise to a friend. (Here’s a tutorial for tiny bunting.)
