Write Me Back – A Simple Gift Idea

Write me back cards are a great way to stay in touch with friends and family! And they are so incredibly simple to make.

My friend, Steph, has the gift-giving gene. Every time I receive a present in the mail from her I get as excited as a little kid at Christmas. And every time I open one of those boxes, I’m met by things I instantly love (and sometimes didn’t even know existed!)

For my birthday last year, she gave me write me back cards—a present that is so perfect I have to share it with you. She took 12 pieces of card stock and 12 vibrant envelopes and put one card into each envelope.

Then she stamped each one and added her own address to the envelope. She packaged the stack of 12 envelopes into a beautiful gold butterfly envelope and included some simple instructions:

I was to write or draw a little message to her once a month and send the pre-stamped card to her. She would write or draw a message on the back of the card and send it back to me. And by the end of the year, I would have a series of 12 cards with our musings and drawings as a memento.

I love writing letters and receiving mail so this was such a perfect thing for me. Admittedly, I have almost completely stopped writing letters with the advent of email and free long distance calling on our cell phones. I used to write tomes to my family and friends. Now, not so much. So I’m excited (and inspired!) to get back into letter writing with this card pack.

This would be a great idea for kids to write their grandparents, wouldn’t it? You could customize your card set however you want—if twelve cards seems daunting and you’re afraid you’ll never see them again, then start out with one or two. Since the card is so small, you don’t have to feel overwhelmed with writing a huge message. I did a little research and found these brightly colored cards on Amazon.com that would work well.

Another idea would be to theme your cards. You could make them holiday-themed so you would potentially receive a card around different holidays. You could write a question in sharpie across the top of each card as a writing prompt. You could also go ahead and fill out the first card as a surprise.

Above all, I recommend that you keep it simple and sweet. You don’t have to be an Artist to draw a bit about your day. Stick figures work great here! The whole point is communication and love, right? Not to mention how fun it is to receive real old-fashioned mail!

Get this bundle of letter writing goodness! Stationery, tutorials, an address book, and more! Print out the stationery and get back into letter writing. Snail mail is the best!

I LOVE this idea!! We’re moving several hours away from our families due to job changes and I know it’ll be hard for our kids to be away from their grandparents for the first time. This is the perfect solution to make it easy to keep in touch via mail! Thank you for sharing this!!

Wow, what an amazing idea!! I love getting mail (don’t we all?) and try to write to friends and family. But certainly not as often as before! I will be sending some of these out in hopes of having my mailbox full!

What a fabulous idea! I love getting mail that isn’t bills (who doesn’t?!). I do try to keep up with writing letters along with the text messaging, fb posts and tweeting. I saw another gal doing a Mailbox Monday thing for her 2015 goal, to write a letter to someone every Monday. I love all these ideas. Thanks for sharing.

I love this so much!! I used to write letters and cards all the time. Remember PEN PALS? How exciting was that to get letters from pen pals…I had them from all over the world when I was a teenager (back in the 70’s) Fun fun fun

YES! I remember having pen pals. I used to write novels to my friends who moved away and to my family when I was in college. I love getting real mail! My mom’s letters are my favorites–little drawings and details about her day that are just so nice. (even though we talk on the phone all the time, letters are just cool! :))

I have friends who live across the country. There are 4 children in the family and I am going to do this for them, We keep up with each other sporadically and I think this is a perfect way for us to communicate with each other and stay involved in each other’s lives. Thanks so much for this clever, creative and inexpensive idea.
